Dr Vikas Khetan is an ophthalmologist who has specialized in Vitreoretina, Ocular Oncology and Ocular Genetics. He did his MBBS from JSS Medical College, Mysore and post-graduation in ophthalmology from KMC, Manipal, where he was an OEU scholar. He then did his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery from Sankara Nethralaya and also did his DNB in ophthalmology at the same time. He was adjudged the best outgoing fellow during his time. He then did a one-year fellowship in Ocular Oncology from the Hospital for Sickkids, Toronto under Drs Brenda Gallie and Rand Simpson. Following a 7-year consultancy at Sankara Nethralaya he then embarked on another fellowship in Ocular Genetics at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, USA. He has also done an observeship in Ocular Oncology with Dr Carol and Jerry Shields. He is one of the few triple fellowship trained ophthalmologist in India. Last year he Edited a book by Springer Publications- Intraocular tumors. He has published more than 130 articles in peer reviewed journals, 20 chapters in books of ophthalmology. He has presented more than 70 papers in international conferences and 40 papers in national and state conferences. He has given more than 70 lectures in international and national conferences. He is a reviewer of 40+ Journals. He is currently the Section Editor of Ocular Genetics for Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and is also a Section Editor for Nepalese Journal of ophthalmology. He is a reviewing editor, retina section for Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, Journal. He has received many awards, which includes JM Pahwa award for best paper at VRSI meeting, many travel grants for various meetings. At the AIOS meeting in Coimbatore (2018), he received the Coveted P. Siva Reddy International Award. He received the SAO excellence award at the SAARC ophthalmology meeting in Kathmandu in 2018. At APAO, 2019 this year he received the APAO Achievement award. Dr Khetan has Received Honorary FRCS Edinburgh, FRCS Galsgow and FRC Ophth London. Dr Khetan was also elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in October 2019. Currently he is working as a Senior Consultant in the Dept of Vitreoretina and Ocular Oncology.

    Coats Disease

    Introduction History In 1908 George Coats1 original description of the disease was based primarily on histopathologic examination of enucleated eyes and identified retinal vascular aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, intra- and subretinal hemorrhages, and exudates. Coats categorized eyes with these characteristic morphologic findings into three groups: Group I demonstrated massive subretinal exudate alone, group II consisted of eyes with massive subretinal exudate, intra and subretinal hemorrhage, and retinal vascular dilatations, and group III included eyes with subretinal exudate and retinal arteriovenous malformations. Von Hippel2 later identified group III as a separate entity, angiomatosis retinae, which led to the exclusion of this group from the spectrum of Coats disease. In 1912, Theodor Leber3 described a disorder with similar retinal vascular abnormalities to Coats disease, but without massive subretinal exudate, hemorrhage, and serous retinal detachment.     Choroidal Melanoma: Ready Reckoner for the Postgraduates

    Introduction Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in adults [1]. Second most common type of primary malignant melanoma after cutaneous melanoma. It arises from neuroectodermal melanocytes within the uveal tissue. Epidemiology There is strong racial variation in the incidence, with the white population most commonly affected. The mean age-adjusted incidence of uveal melanoma in the United States is 5.2 per million per year [2]. Males had a significantly higher age-adjusted incidence of 6.0 per million population compared to females, where the average age-adjusted incidence was 4.5 [3].
