A Beginners Guide to Ophthalmic Surgical Microscope

An operating surgical microscope is the most important optical instrument in the modern era of ophthalmic surgeries. It provides the surgeon with a magnified and illuminated high-quality image of the small ophthalmic structures. Being binocular the surgical microscopes gives the additional benefit of high-quality stereoscopy. History The first German doctor to use a stereomicroscope was Dr. Hans Hinselmann (1884-1959), Prof. of Gynaecology under Dr. Otto von Franque at the University Clinic, Bonn, who adapted in 1925 a Leitz stereomicroscope with coaxial illumination to a movable floor stand. He named IT “colposcope” and used it to visualize the female genital organs particularly for cancer of the cervix. Dr. Hans Littmann (1908 – 1991), head of Med-Lab at Zeiss OptonOberkochen, West Germany (now Carl Zeiss A.G.) and his team of technicians designed in 1953 their first ophthalmic operating microscope Prerequisites for an ideal operating microscope Must have stereoscopic visualization.

Five Things You Should Know About Intracameral Bimatoprost Sustained Release Implant

The Implant Durysta (ALLERGAN) is the first-ever intracameral sustained-release bimatoprost implant. The glaucoma treatment paradigm has shifted towards earlier intervention and targeting the actual pathology. The main problem one faces with glaucoma management is compliance with the medications. The intracameral bimatoprost addresses the problem satisfactorily. Durysta, a 10-microgram bimatoprost implant, becomes the first biodegradable, intracameral sustained release implant indicated to reduce Intraocular pressure (IOP). It is hard for patients to maintain quality of life while being on topical anti-glaucoma medications – The Intracameral Bimatoprost makes it possible. Administration of the Implant Durysta is a rod-like implant preloaded within a sterile applicator with a 28-gauge needle tip. The needle is inserted under an aseptic condition in the anterior chamber and then with the press of a trigger button implant is released. After the implantation, the needle is removed and the

How to evaluate a Humphrey Visual field in Practical Examination

Visual field is the part of environment that is visible to the steadily fixing eye. The limits of visual field for each fixing eye is 60 degrees superiorly and nasally, 75 degrees inferiorly and 110 degrees temporally. Fig 1 shows the normal island of vision as described by TRAQUAIR. The hill is highest at fixation, where the visual sensitivity is highest and as we go peripherally the height of hill decreases due to decreasing visual sensitivity in the periphery. Based on this principle the modern visual field testings are operated. Perimetry is the measurement of “Hill of Vision” in terms of establishing the patient’s differential light sensitivity. There are mainly two types of perimetry test: Kinetic (ie. Bjerrum’s screen, Goldmann, Lister perimetry) Static /automated (ie. Humphrey, octopus) We will be discussing about how to evaluate the Humphrey visual field (HVF). Before delving deep into the Humphrey field testing, we should know few basic points which will keep on revolving dur
